Section 39 - Model Rocket Contest
Saturday, September 10, 2011 (after the archery contest).
1. Open to 4-H youth 8-19 years of age.
2. Contestants must provide their own model rockets, wadding, tools, and engines. Launch equipment suitable for 1/8" launch lugs will be provided.
3. All rockets must be made of lightweight material such as paper, wood, plastic, and rubber with no metal body parts other than engine mounts or small clips.
4. Models must use a single standard-size (not mini) "A" engine for each flight. Only preloaded factory made engines will be permitted.
5. Total weight of models plus engine must be less than 2.5 ounces.
6. All models must have a single streamer recovery system, and the streamer must deploy and completely unfurl during decent; cradles are not allowed, but helicopter recover is not.
7. Streamers must be at least 1 inch wide by 10 inches long (but can be wider or longer) and be attached to the model at only one end; streamers may be made of cloth, paper, ribbon or plastic.
8. Contestants will be given two chances to launch successfully for each flight; a successive launch is ignition of engine.
9. Models must not separate into two or more unattached parts during flight.
10. All models must pass a preflight safety, engine, and weight inspection at the launch site prior to each flight. If any rocket is deemed unsafe or overweight by the judge, it will be disqualified from competition.
11. All judges' decisions are final.
12. Pre-registration is encouraged.
Call the 4-H office at 301-868-9636.
Duration
The objective of the duration class is to see which rocket can make the longest flight. Each flight will be timed by two judges with stop watches, and the judges' times are averaged and recorded. A flight begins when the rocket starts to move upward on the launch rod and ends when the rocket ends its descent (or its decent can no longer be seen.) Contestants may launch twice; the longest flight of the two launches will be the contestant's final score. Highest score among all contestants in a duration class wins the class.

Spot Landing
The objective of the spot landing class is to see which rocket can land closest to a marked spot on the ground. Measures will measure for any rocket that land within 50 feet of the spot. Measurement will be done with a standard tape measure and made from the tip of the rocket's nose cone to the marked spot. The measurement recorded is the contestant's score. Contestants may launch only once. Lowest score amount all contestants in a spot landing class wins the class.
